Intellectual Defender of the Bangsa Moro Cause

During the debate on the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), I was terribly irritated when I heard Senator Bongbong Marcos, Senator Alan Cayetano and all other anti-Muslim, anti-BBL politicians run roughshod over Moros trying to defend the BBL.

For all the numerous Moro governors, congressmen, mayors, lawyers, government officials, rebel leaders, leader wannabes, rich and educated Moros, nobody could convincingly debate against the not-so-intelligent Christian Filipino senators and politicians. Truly sad.

I missed my late brother, Macapanton ‘Jun’ Abbas  very much. Had he been alive, he would have been in the forefront defending the BBL, even if he didn’t approve of it. He would do anything to advance the Cause of the Bangsa Moro, even bit by bit. He was, after all, the “Brain of the Bangsa Moro revolution.” Jun was also a champion debater of Ateneo de Davao and University of the Philippines'(UP) College of Law. He was a national and international champion debater.

My second brother Firdausi was against the BBL so he did not defend it. It was unfortunate because he was also a national champion debater. He and Jun brought fame to UP as national debating champions. He was also a champion orator. Besides, he was right there at the start of the Bangsa Moro revolution. He was editor-in-chief of the Moro newsletter in Manila which exposed the Marcos government atrocities against the Bangsa Moro. Clippings from these newsletter was used by our brother Jun Abbas when he presented the Moro Cause to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) through its head at that time, Tungku Abdul Rahman of Malaysia. That started the Internationalization of the Moro struggle.

Although I am no orator or debater as my brothers, I would have loved to debate with the Christian politicians. But then, I’m not a politician or a rebel or a “peacenik” so I was not invited to any of the political forums, esp, in both houses of Congress, or in the media. Besides, I wasn’t enamored of the BBL either.

I am so glad that now, my brother Dr. Firdausi ‘Sing’ Ismail Abbas, the Sultan of Lanao, is a member of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission. Whether he likes it or not, he will have to defend the Bangsa Moro Cause. He is the only Moro involved in the political peace process who can effectively demolish the likes of Bongbong Marcos, Peter Alan Cayetano or any other anti-Moro politician in any debate on the Bangsa Moro.

I wish him and the BTC all the luck in the world!
